- Best New Solar CompanyThis is bar none the best portable solar charger I've come across. It charges basically anything smaller than an iPad. I've charged countless toys in little amounts of time during hikes in / or fly fishing. Amazing piece of technology. Secondly, their customer service is polite, know their products, and respond quickly to emails / phone calls. This company and their gear couldn't be more highly recommended. It's the best I've found.
- works with iPadFYI: I just got this a few days ago and am happy to report that it does charge an iPad (1st generation). I was curious, since it's not supposed to charge the iPad, so I followed the instructions and hooked it up. The charging icon in the upper right corner said 'not charging' but I left it connected anyway. I checked in about an hour by unplugging it (to get rid of the 'Not Charging' icon) and the charge had gone from 6% to 9%. I plugged it back in and in about 7-8 hours it had charged from 6% to 30%. Not super fast, but the iPad's battery lasts a long time, and I'm not taking it backpacking anyway. Will report later on my iPhone 3GS.
- Good product but not good for my situationI'm sure this is a great product for most uses. However, I have an iPhone 4 and it would not work with it. I got the 'charging device not compatible' message on my phone. I called their very excellent customer service; you get a human being almost immediately. The first suggestion was to turn my phone completely off and then connect it to the Nomad 7. That didn't work. I called back. The second suggestion was to take it outside instead of having it in my kitchen window as the window I had it in was probably blocking some of the light. That is not practical for me, so I moved it to the side of the sliding window that does not have a screen. That worked! It charged about 5% over the next 30 minutes. HOWEVER, when the sun started to fade, although I didn't get an 'incompatible' message, it was not charging; my phone charge was still at the same level after 90 minutes of 'charging'. I think the problem is that it needs strong direct sunlight for several hours in order to charge the device. I am just not in a situation where I can do that.
9/6/11: I would like to revise my rating. I believe this is worth 5 stars; I'm sure it's great if you are outdoors in bright sunlight but I am looking for a source of power for my cell phone during hurricanes and other power outages. It is just not practical to leave my phone and the solar power panel outdoors for several hours in those situations.
- Awesome Solar ChargerI bought this model blind. It was the only one available on base so I just went with it. I have to say that this panel is fantastic. I strapped it to the back of my backpack when I hiked up Mt Fuji and used it to keep my iPod charged to shoot video. One draw back is that if you go into shade or a cloud blocks the sun it stops working until its in direct sunlight.
- pretty good itemi bought this item and thought it wasnt going to charge me phone (droid mytouch) but it did charge it. i will update later and let you know how long it takes to fully charge but the book says it only takes one hour to charge cell phones which it pretty cool i think. i bought a solio charger before and that solar charger has nothing on the goal zero chargers. the thing with the solio chargers is that it has an internal battery and when you put the charger under the hot sun it fries the internal battery after a while.. the goal zero transfer the solar energy straight to your device, which is cool because you can put your solar charger in the sun and have you device in the nice cool shade.
